A shortage of semiconductor chips for the automotive industry will keep Chicago’s big Ford manufacturing plant idle until at least May 14.

Ford (NYSE: F) had to shut down the Chicago plant — which builds its popular Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator sport utility vehicles — on April 12 because of the shortage, which has tripped up automakers’ abilities to build vehicles, including their most popular units.
