From the founder of Mariano’s, customers can shop while sipping a glass of wine

Dom’s Kitchen & Market, the niche grocer that’s packing a mini-food hall of sorts with a coffeeshop, has an opening date. Dom’s will debut to the public on June 8, according to a spokesperson. Construction continues at the corner of Diversey and Halsted at 2730 N. Halsted Street in Lincoln Park, just south of Lakeview.

The goal is expansion, and Dom’s has raised $25 million in venture capital and other sources. The chain is described as “a next-generation omnichannel local food emporium.” This is the first location for Dom’s, a project from Bob Mariano, the founder of the Mariano’s grocery chain. His budding chain won’t be as large as Mariano’s, a traditional American supermarket. It’s taking cues from global markets that are smaller and known more for stocking goods from local purveyors.

Dom’s will serve alcohol.

The food hall side will have Asian and other cuisines represented. Customers can order custom charcuterie plates. Fresh baked goods and breakfast sandwiches will also be available, and there’s a grab-and-go section that includes sushi. Dom’s will also serve alcoholic drinks on premises.

Crews razed a dated strip mall with a parking lot that housed a Dunkin’, repurposing it for Dom’s, a business that better fits Chicago’s city’s urban needs. The car parking remains, and it appears they’ll set up patio tables right outside the windows to provide some outdoor seating, a real commodity during the pandemic.

“Dom’s” is a reference to Dominick’s Finer Foods, the defunct Chicago grocery chain that Mariano’s grandfather founded. Mariano would found his namesake grocery chain in 2010 while CEO of Roundy’s, the subsidiary of Kroger that operates hundreds of stores across the Midwest.

Stay tuned for more updates. Dom’s is one of the most anticipated openings of 2021.
